Invitation on behalf of Sergio Requena-Rueda and the Unite Coventry & Warwickshire ‘Tom Mann’ Branch to a rich programme of events in Coventry that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coup D’état in Chile.

On 11th September 1973, the Chilean army initiated a coup d’état by murdering Chile’s President, Salvador Allende, who had been democratically elected three years prior. From 11th September to 4th October, exhibitions, talks, and film screenings will be held at several locations in Coventry to remember the execution and disappearance of over 3,000 people, amongst them 6 British-Chilean citizens, which followed the coup.

Commemorations in Coventry will commence on 11th September with the exhibition of a unique collection of political posters from Allende’s ‘Popular Unity’ government at the splendid LTB Showrooms, which will run through to 23rd September. This will be followed by a launch event and meeting on 14th September with special guest Jeremy Corbyn MP, and a screening of documentary film “Santiago Rising” on 20th September, which tells the story of the largest protest movement in Chile’s history – also held at the LTB Showrooms.

Two more film screenings will be held to close off the programme of events. On 27th September, the documentary film “Nae Pasaran” will be shown at the Council House, telling the incredible true story of Scottish Rolls Royce workers who managed to ground half of Chile’s Air Force. On 4th October, the film “Machuca”, exploring the 1973 coup through the coming-of-age story of a pair of 12-year-old boys from opposite extremes of society, will be shown at Coventry Cathedral in association with the Stoke Film Society and ACTION RAYZ.
