The replacement of the replica Coventry Cross is taking place near Cross Cheaping and is to be accompanied by a 3D printed statue of King Henry VI.
Work on the new cross has reached the first level and will eventually reach to 17 metres. It is hoped to be completed by the Spring, having been delayed by the need for archaeological investigation.
The BBC has reported that the cross is to be accompanied by a 3D-printed statue of Henry VI. Both are part of an £800,000 project in the city centre.
The city council said it would be an exact replica of a statue made in the 1500s, which is now housed in the Herbert Art Gallery.
The Coventry Society campaigned against the demolition of the replica cross, which was removed at the behest of the Shearer Group in order to create a more acceptable environment for one of the restaurants in Cathedral Lanes. We feared that the Cross would not be rebuilt, but our fears were unfounded as the replacement is being constructed in a location nearer to the site of the medieval cross.
When plans to relocate the landmark were approved in 2018, councillors were told it would cost £150,000. It would be interesting to see what the final cost comes out as.
We would also remind the Council that planning condition no 3 on application FUL/2018/2655 requires a piece of public art to be placed near the site of the 1976 cross. Plans for this have not yet been revealed.
