Five parks in Coventry have been awarded the prestigious national Green Flag Award.

The winning parks are the War Memorial Park, Coombe Country Park, Longford Park, Allesley Park and Caludon Castle Park. They are among a record 1,797 UK parks and green spaces given the Award this year.  This is the ninth year running that these five parks have achieved this award and the Award itself is in its third decade.

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. It recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world. It is awarded to parks and green spaces that demonstrate the highest possible environmental standards. are beautifully maintained and have excellent visitor facilities.

To celebrate the award two of Coventry’s famous landmarks – Whittle Arch and Broadgate – went green for parks to celebrate Coventry’s Green Flag Award success and to say thank you to the parks staff, volunteers and the Green Flag Award Judges for all their work this year.  In this they joined buildings and landmarks across the country, including the White Cliffs of Dover at Samphire Hoe, the London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Salford’s Media City,

The Coventry Society has noticed that since the start of the Coronavirus epidemic our local parks have been much better used and by a wider variety of users. Early indications are that this will continue when and if things return to “normal”. Our congratulants to the City Council and the local parks Friends Groups that support them for achieving this Award.
