‘ EARLY MUSIC IN COVENTRY’, Binchois Consort, 8 pm, 20thApril
The award-winning Binchois Consort will perform early music linked to Coventry. Conductor Andrew Kirkman will be speaking at the ‘Celebrations’ conference during the day and will introduce each piece at the performance. Included will be two movements of the Missa Caput, of which a manuscript fragment remarkably survives in Coventry. This great work may have been performed for Henry VI when he attended Mass at St Michael’s Church in 1451. Also included will be the hymn Alma Redemptis Mater, mentioned in Chaucer’s ‘Prioress’s Tale’, which recent research has linked to the St Mary’s Hall tapestry.
Founded by its conductor Andrew Kirkman in 1995, the Binchois Consort has performed widely in Europe and the USA and has recorded 12 discs on Hyperion Records to stunning critical acclaim. Its recordings have won numerous music industry awards, including ‘Recording of the Month’ and ‘Early Music Disc of the Year’ in Gramophone magazine and ‘five stars’ in BBC Music Magazine. The group’s recording ‘Music for Henry V’ was a ‘Critics Choice’ in BBC Music Magazine. www.binchoisconsort.com
