We are sad to report that for the second time in history, St. Nicholas Church in Radford has been demolished.
The first St. Nicholas Church, which dated back to 1874, was destroyed in the blitz of November 1940.
Its replacement, which was consecrated in 1955, has followed in its wake this month.
The building, which is a local landmark, was locally listed in 1992.
The Church was designed by Richard Twentyman and was of a revolutionary design. Unfortunately, the design did not pass the test of time and its sloping walls did not keep out the rain. Renovation was not economically feasible and the congregation stopped using the church in 2009.
Planning permission has been granted for the demolition of the existing church and the redevelopment of the site to include for a proposed Residential Care Home with associated landscaping and carparking.
The Coventry Society is sad to lose this important post-war church, but we recognise that fundamental faults in its design mean that it cannot be saved. Goodbye St. Nicholas.
