Two planning applications being consider before Christmas give our council the opportunity to show its true colours in relation to greenfield and brownfield development.

In November there is a planning application to develop a former gasworks site close to the city centre – a brownfield site. In December the Council will be determining a planning application for the development of its own farmland on the far edge of the city – a greenfield site.

Compare and Contrast!

Abbott’s Park is a carefully designed development on derelict land close to the city centre. A new park has been created at the heart of the development and the full development will include up to 700 apartments, duplexes and townhouses.

The Site is sustainably located, within walking distance of the City Centre where there is a large range of services and facilities and a primary school opposite. It is a modern high-density development with the emphasis on public and shared transport, walking and cycling.

You can look at the planning application here, read the developer’s webpage here and read CovSoc’s views here.

Part of the Coundon Wedge that the Council wants to develop

Browns Lane is a development of 350 new low-density homes in countryside that forms part of the much loved Coundon Wedge. It is quite some distance away from shops and services and has no provision for walking or cycling to them. It is in walking distance of a single bus route but you will need a car if you want to get anywhere off that route.

You can see the full outline planning application on the Council’s Planning Portal here and read CovSoc views here.
